TY for this challenging & helpful review “Opportunities for women in surgery have improved [but] much work remains to make [it] supportive of women, empowering them to optimally contribute”  @Elizabeth Stephens, MD, PhD  @Sarah Temkin  @Pringl  @Melina Kibbe  @JAMA Surgery https://ja.ma/2ZaiJP3

For weeks now, I've been terrified to speak up about this. I was told I'd never work on the Hill or a campaign again if I sent these tweets. But I refuse to sit by while people like Miranda Margowsky pretend to be WOKE for clout -- hiding their own racism behind online allyship.

Strong message from  @Kamala Harris (per usual) and reminder of the responsibility we all have as white Democrats to educate ourselves on racism (a privilege in and of itself) and become stronger allies. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/10/us/politics/kamala-harris-racism-police.html

How do you commemorate 5-8 years of general surgery training at @BWHSurgery in the time of #COVID19? Socially distanced final service conference + spirit fingers all the way to a champagne toast! Congrats to our #brighamtrained graduates!

Epic week! 1. Matched at  @MD Anderson Cancer Center for surg onc fellowship, 2. Final week of surgery residency  @BWH Department of Surgery, and 3. Getting ready to start  #pallcare fellowship  @MGH Palliative Care & Geriatric Medicine. Life is good!

Thx @JBMatthews for being our virtual visiting professor and sharing lessons with the @BWHSurgery residents about life, labs, and #lollapalooza

The President just released "Opening Up America Again" slides and I have some initial thoughts: 1. There's a lot to like here. Its measured approach that starts slow and builds. That's right. 2. The proposed gating criteria - the heart of this -- is a problem 1/n

Dr. Andrew Thomas is a hand surgeon in Minneapolis. Years ago he was a med student @ColumbiaPS. Today he’s back as a volunteer in our OR ICU pods, sleeping in his old room at Bard Hall & working on the frontlines.

He wrote a letter to friends back home:

COVID Lesson #6 from NYC pandemic: EVERYTHING is COVID, even when it's not. Did colectomy/liver repair for GSW to abd last night. My biggest concern isn't leak, abscess, dehiscence - it's for this pt getting COVID. Horizontal transmission rampant - despite "non-COVID" wards.

Question for my friends who are Palliative Care experts. How is  #COVID19 interrupting end of life discussions for non-covid patients whose families cannot see their suffering due to visitor restrictions?  @Zara Cooper

I guess one silver lining is that COVID isn’t making a bunch of kids sick?

A note from Bill:

"I have always believed that our country’s strength is our people. We see that every day, in the heroic work of health care workers, first responders, and everyday people reaching out to lend each other a hand."

How to improve #Healthcare value in 4 slides from @BWHSurgery Chief Resident #peternajjar - says if we want to truly implement value based initiatives - we must start actually counting how much things cost versus estimating. But US currently not able - need to learn from others! 4

Please review our groups work as we try to lift the veil on a very difficult subject for surgeons and patients.

@John Vance  @Liz Lilley  @Melissa Red Hoffman, MD, ND  @Yvette WilliamsBrown  @Maria J. Silveira  @Kristin Edwards, MD FAAHPM Residents need to know they are empowered to advocate for and activate their patients to ask for goal concordant care. Spend time with then and learn their needs just like any other component of care. This is a team approach.

I support a ban because I have seen what an assault weapon can do to a young teenager. Blood pouring out of a young boy from a pulverized liver while we try to save his life. Then, telling his parents their only child is dead.  #NeverAgain  #EnoughisEnough  #EndGunViolence
