The Lebanese have been robbed blind for years. At end of last year, they finally had enough. Nothing was working. Mass protests took to streets. But it was too late. And now a vast modern city is in ruins facing a perilous future. So..how late is too late?https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/beirut-explosion-news-lebanon-corruption-deaths-latest-a9655286...

It is incredibly overwhelmingly difficult to hold power to account. And one of the very few tools we have is the right to legally challenge the government. Boris Johnson’s government is now looking to deprive us of that right

Nobody knows. Nobody is pressing Serco for answers. Parliament has gone on holiday. If Labour is holding the govt to account on this, I missed it. Test & trace is entire foundation of our entire virus suppression strategy. AND IT DOESN’T WORK

@Carole Cadwalladr HOW are we only managing to trace 50% of contacts - when NI are getting 98%? Why isn’t this more of a priority?

MSM pundits debating how “untraditional” it would be for Trump to accept his nomination from the White House but who aren’t sounding alarm bells how dangerous it is that he’s on the ballot, are part of the crisis we face. It’s normalization of treason and why Putin keeps winning.

The new *daily* allowance for peers in the House of Lords is £323. The *monthly* allowance for a single person under 25 on Universal Credit is £342.72.

Prediction: total shitshow come Sept when public realise implication of what’s happening re schools. It’s why  #ZeroCOVID is only game in town & why every day we fail to pursue it is another day wasted. We are approaching failed state level of incompetence https://www.bbc.com/news/health-53638083

Retweet if you feel your family is not safe in the hands of Johnson's government

Here’s another headline we may not have seen before: ‘Son of KGB officer to sit in House of Lords’. Could have happened, of course...

Donald Trump, do you have an ounce of regret for American troops who've waited 36 days to know whether or not you care that Putin has reportedly put bounties on their heads? Asking for our American troops & on behalf of ALL Americans.

Read and share this thread. This is undermining not just the election but the Constitutionally-mandated Postal Service. If Trump can’t control Americs, he intends to break it.

This is Louis DeJoy. He is the huge Trump DONOR who Trump made the Postmaster General of the United States. He is trying to DESTROY the US Postal Service to help Trump steal an election.

We need to make him famous.

Abolish the House of Lords

I retweeted this y’day but retweeting it again today. The peerage list is an inflection point. The old rules are dead. Decency, shame, accountability. We the press, public & parliament need to take serious stock. This is a Trumpian moment. Johnson has changed politics. So must we

Why are we not asking why? Peerages are pay-offs, legalised quid pro quos. He owes Lebedev for his press baron fealty. He owes Gisela Stuart for keeping her mouth shut. What does he owe LeaveEU’s Kate Hoey & Brexit Party’s Claire Fox? What’s the deal?

Grayling was, obviously, supposed to keep a lid on the Russia Report until *after* the KGB colonel’s son & the oligarch’s bagman had been put in the Lords. But no matter. Left with a choice between looking corrupt & not looking corrupt, Johnson has once again been true to form.

On Thursday we filed our detailed grounds and witness statements in our Judicial Review of the Gove/Cummings' decision to award an £840,000 contract to long time associates. We will post the full bundle on Monday but here are some highlights. THREAD

The BBC "struck the wrong note" by depicting Sunak as a superhero... what kind of note? Subservient sycophancy to those with power - unthinking bias to the right - let's make this a teachable moment: could they have done the same with Anneliese Dodds?

Niche but important. 2 v serious US investigations into Facebook were precipitated by Cambridge Analytica scandal. SEC has serious powers, it really was possibly that Facebook execs were looking at jail time. But FTC commissioner here suggests a deal was cut...👀👀👀

It’s my opinion Facebook paid $5B to FTC and buried a smaller SEC settlement to avoid Zucka/Sandberg depositions/role in a cover-up (involving insider trading, foreign interference in elections, consumer data harms, etc). Yesterday FTC Commissioner @chopraftc implied same worry.

Johnson doesn’t care about the country. He doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. He’s there to reward friends, repay favours and consolidate his own power, and he’ll do whatever he damn well likes. Never has a prime minister so openly paraded his corruption or contempt.

Very grateful that this brave young man decided to speak to  @Channel 4 News about his terrible ordeal it took a lot of guts and we are very happy we were able to share it with all other broadcasters

In his own words: ‘K’, a 21 year old hospital worker from Bristol (pictured with his sister) who last week had a car deliberately driven into him, @ASPolice say, in a racially aggravated assault. He suffered terrible injuries.

My interview with him on @Channel4News at 7

'Govts welcomed oligarchs and money with open arms, providing them with....connections at highest levels with access to political figures' -  #RussiaReport 21 July Evgeny Lebedev nominated for Peerage - 31 July 2020

Boris Johnson nominates Evgeny Lebedev to Lords. No-one has any clue why https://www.theguardian.com/media/2019/nov/17/boris-johnson-met-alexander-lebedev-without-security-a...

No one would argue with putting in place local action to reduce the transmission of coronavirus. But announcing measures affecting potentially millions of people late at night on Twitter is a new low for the government’s communications during this crisis.

We've been telling you for YEARS that as a malignant narcissist he will cause chaos, destruction and death, and usher in a kleptofascist pathocracy in America. But we were just mental health professionals, right? What do we know...

Belarus pro-democracy uprising is the story that has everything worth paying attention to, even if you are not into Belarusian affairs.

The rally of Sviatlana #Tsikhanouskaya is about to start. Thousands have already gathered. A policeman I talked to said there might be up to 7,000 people right now. More to come, Tsikhanouskaya is giving a speech later #Belarus

"The only thing that will stop Trump and his crew are legal consequences. They don't mind being caught: they enjoy flaunting their criminality. They just don't want to be punished. It is critical that people grasp the difference." --  @GaslitNation https://www.patreon.com/posts/26313668

NEW: What's most newsworthy about this release of documents is how much of it is still sealed and hidden from public scrutiny. Here are the names of people who may have info about Epstein's sex trafficking. All of them are blacked out.

International evidence could hardly be more clear: if you control the virus, spending in restaurants, entertainment venues etc bounces back. If not. It doesn’t. @FT tracker
