Twitter could face $250M FTC fine over use of personal data for ad targeting. Incentives to abuse data are simply irresistible. https://www.mobilemarketer.com/news/twitter-could-face-250m-ftc-fine-over-use-of-personal-data-for-a...

He says he’ll let Microsoft buy Tik-Tok only if they pay the U.S. a large fee—“like the landlord-tenant,” where “the tenant...they pay what’s called key money.” Classic Trump: key money is a bribe, in NYC illegal to demand of prospective apartment renters. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/03/business/economy/trump-tiktok-china-business.html?referringSource...

Microsoft in talks to acquire TikTok US. Tech nationalism and data sovereignty are real. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/01/technology/tiktok-sale-trump-ban.html

oh wow teaser for  #TheVow on  @HBO Max dropped this is what the directors of  #TheGreatHack have also been working on, deep inside the  #NXIVM cult scandal http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news/2020/07/30/hbo-documentary-series-the-vow-taking-an-inside-look-a...

Haunting how Zuck managed to escape a deposition while dodging parliaments and dissembling for congress.

It’s my opinion Facebook paid $5B to FTC and buried a smaller SEC settlement to avoid Zucka/Sandberg depositions/role in a cover-up (involving insider trading, foreign interference in elections, consumer data harms, etc). Yesterday FTC Commissioner @chopraftc implied same worry.

3 Point Plan for GOP 2020 — accept and exploit hostile foreign interference — sabotage the census and postal service — disseminate dangerous falsities about voting

tweeted this yesterday, but wrote it up for posterity. during the tech ceo hearing, for some reason, matt gaetz defended a federally designated terrorist org as well as homophobic and white supremacist groups https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/07/matt-gaetz-jeff-bezos-jewish-defense-league/

Obama reflects on "Bloody Sunday" in 1965, when John Lewis and other civil rights marchers were brutally beaten by police in Selma: "I imagine initially, that day, the troopers thought they'd won the battle"

OBAMA: "Bull Connor may be gone, but today we witness with our own eyes police officers kneeling on the necks of Black Americans. George Wallace may be gone, but we can witness our federal government sending agents to use tear gas and batons against peaceful demonstrators."

3 USC 1: the election shall be “on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November, in every fourth year.“ No exceptions. The president is signaling the propensity for dictatorship we warned of in impeachment & trying to distract from 32% economic drop & Russian bounties

Having worked with  @OSCE/ODIHR on election observation missions in different countries, I'd just point out that this is the kind of stuff you expect of vile dictatorships. Ummm, seriously disturbing stuff.

Good Morning. Announcement that a third of the US economy has evaporated and POTUS floats a trial balloon suspending the election.

Facebook is a case study in monopoly power: It harvests and monetizes our data, then uses it to spy on competitors—to copy, acquire, and kill rivals.

This destructive model makes it impossible for new companies to flourish—harming our democracy, small businesses, and consumers.

New from me: Fresh docs shed more light on Facebook’s Instagram deal & Zuckerberg’s competitive streak. At one point, Systrom asks if MZ will go into “destroy mode” if IG rebuffs FB. The answer: “probably.”
